Am I Doing It Wrong? | Stacey Marble Photography

Doing things a different way,
and reaching the same conclusion

I've been thinking a lot about where I want to be, specifically in the photography world. I see so many successful photographers, which is wonderful, it gives me the hope that there really is room for all of us in this saturated market. :) As I watch people share their stories, their tutorials and secrets, I have wondered again and again, "Am I doing it wrong?"

I'm a major rule follower. Like, really. I used to panic a little when I didn't know what I was supposed to do. I think of myself as creative, but mostly, I'm creative within the creative "rules," ha ha! I thrived in my art classes in high school and college, because we always had assignments. Once I stopped taking classes, I pretty much stopped drawing. I didn't know what to draw. I have a hard time imagining up my own creative pieces.

I remember a specific instance in college, where I was watching a fellow student do something in Photoshop. She was using words and buttons I didn't even know about! And I began to worry that I had no clue what I was actually doing. In the end, my Photoshopped product looked similar to hers. We came to nearly the same conclusion, using different methods. So I learned that, yes, I still have a lot to learn, and always will, but that doesn't mean I am doing it wrong. I'm just doing it different.
I'm not saying different is wrong. I'm not saying it's best. There are tried and true methods for success, but different, in my opinion, is almost never bad. Someone had to try something different at some point to get where we are today.

So tell me, what is it that YOU do differently? Have you ever wondered if you were doing it wrong? Or have you always been a trail blazer, never worrying about how others do it?
